Howard once mentioned that the Conan stories were out of order because he envisioned them as a series of tavern-tales, as a man who had travelled far and lived long recalling stories as they came to him. That's why they jump around in place and time and why so much of Conan's life is unchronicled. I appreciate that the point of these comics is to provide a chronology for the Conan stories and link them all together into a single narrative, but I don't feel like they need quite so many recurring themes and characters as they have now.

The original Howard stories got on fine without them. Next Review: Conan, Vol.

Jun 11, Mike rated it really liked it. An excellent Conan tale full of zombies, giant bugs and other monsters. More importantly Thomas actually manages to introduce a little girl to the plot and a bond between her and Conan that isn't annoying or out of character for Conan. In fact, I found myself a little sad that by the end of the tale Conan, true to his nature, had to leave the girl behind with others to properly raise her following the horrible demise of her ethically compromised mother.

After all, Conan's life of blood and steel An excellent Conan tale full of zombies, giant bugs and other monsters. After all, Conan's life of blood and steel is no place for a child by Crom. Again, the art is not necessarily what I would prefer for a Conan tale but once you get used to it's simpler style is well done and serves the story well.

What was particularly fun about this book is how nicely it sets up the Queen of the Black Coast story in the next volume.

Given how that tale begins with Conan on the run and leaping aboard a ship setting out to sea it was nice of Thomas to give his actions in that regard this nice back story. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

Jan 19, Michael rated it it was amazing Shelves: comics-graphic-novels , sci-fi-fantasy-horror. Always satisfying. May 14, Clark Hallman rated it really liked it Shelves: fantasy-sword-sorcery , graphic-novels. Volume 12 of the series joins Conan on the Road of Kings where he is recruited and manipulated to become part of a plot to remove and replace the King of Aquilonia. Later, he is forced into battle against numerous swordsmen in a port city. I liked this volume of the series very much. Roy Thomas the original writer of Conan in comics provides a very interesting story with plenty of death-defying action and his ruthless Conan character is true to Robert E.

In addition, the magical artistic contributions of Mike Hawthorne, Dan Panosian, John Lucas and Dan Jackson brought the barbarian and this story to life. If you like your Conan to be cut from the cloth of DC superhero comics, then you won't have an issue. But if you have become accustomed to the darker plots and more brooding attitudes of earlier volumes, you may be disappointed. The first of these that I have read in a while, I was both pleased and a little disappointed.

The artwork is neither the best, but neither did it jar like that of some of the volumes a few books back. The stories were OK, but nothing really special and I did not really feel like I gained any more real insight into the character of Conan. This mostly just felt like a filler book, and unlike some of the other earlier books, I did not notice any real build towards a later story, other than moving Conan from one place to another. I look forward to stronger stories in the future. Apr 16, Douglas Koehne rated it liked it Shelves: comics-tpb. More of the same by Roy Thomas very average story and Mike Hawthorne very poor art continuing the issue arc celebrating Conan's 40th anniversary of being brought to comics. These issues bring Conan into Aquilonia, introducing Conan to future personalities that play a larger role in his life much later in his adventuring career.

This is Conan from the mediocre 80's comics rather than some of the better Conan comics of the past decade. Jan 26, Timothy Boyd rated it really liked it. The new Conan comic series does good justice to the Robert E. Howard stories. While the art does come and go in quality at time, overall it is a good.

The adaptations of the original stories is well done. The fill in stories are also well done and follow the flow of the Character's life as written by Howard. Recommended to comic fans and Very recommended to Howard and Conan fans. Nov 07, Scott Lee rated it liked it.

Conan Vol.12 - Throne of Aquilonia

Stronger in both key aspects. Thomas seems to find his footing, and the art, while still not in the ball park of the earlier artists on this series is much improved over the last volume and the next volume for that matter. Apr 04, Andrew rated it liked it Shelves: comics.

Better than the last couple, not as good as early installments. A decent first story arc, a mediocre second story. Artwork is passable. At least this volume doesn't make me want to give up on Conan, and that's an improvement over the last one.

Dec 31, Marko rated it liked it. Second volume of Roy Thomas' grand return to Conan. Unfortunately, like the first one, this was not very impressive. The illustrations are haphazard and the stories relatively straight-forward. Not as good as one would expect based on the first few volumes in the series. Nov 10, Aildiin rated it it was ok Shelves: comics. The writing is a tiny bit better than in the last volume but not by much. All in all I am glad to be done with the Road of Kings as the next chapters written by Brian Wood are supposed to be a lot better.

This book and the previous one were a waste of my time Public library copy.
